Parents’ Guide to Helping Your Child Choose the Right University

By Dr Jo Winchester

When your child finishes school, it can feel like everything needs to be decided at once — and that’s a lot for both of you. Some kids know exactly what they want to do, others take their time, and some are still figuring it out. All of these are completely normal.

As parents, we naturally want to help, but we also know our advice doesn’t always land the way we hope. That’s where I come in. As both an educator and a parent, I understand the balance — you want to guide your child without pushing, and you want to help them make choices that feel right for them.

Why this stage matters

Leaving school is a huge transition. Your child is moving from structure and routine into a world of choice. Whether they’re looking at university, TAFE, or heading straight into work, what they really need is support to understand their strengths, values, and goals.

My Pathfinder mentoring sessions are designed for both students and parents. Together, we look at where your child is now, what makes them tick, and which university courses, industries, or future paths align with their personality and potential.

The goal isn’t to pressure them into a decision — it’s to uncover what fits, build confidence, and create clarity. Many families find it’s the conversation that finally brings everyone onto the same page.

Let’s work it out together

If your child is feeling a little lost or if you just want to make sure they’re heading in the right direction, let’s talk. Book a Pathfinder session with Dr Jo Winchester and take the guesswork out of the next big step.
