How Do I Know Which Uni Is Best for Me?

By Dr Jo Winchester

Choosing a university can feel overwhelming. Every campus looks amazing online, every course sounds promising, and everyone seems to have an opinion. So how do you actually know which uni is right for you?

University or work

Start with what matters most

Forget the rankings for a moment. Think about what you want from the experience — the kind of learning, lifestyle, and future it offers. Do you want hands-on learning or academic theory? A small community or a big city buzz? The best choice isn’t the “top” uni — it’s the one that matches how you learn and what you value.

Look beyond the brochure

Go to open days, talk to current students, and explore course details carefully. Ask about work placements, support services, and graduate outcomes. A degree is more than a piece of paper — it’s a few years of your life. Make sure it feels like a good fit.

Be honest about your goals

If you’re unsure what you want to study, that’s normal. Rushing into a course because it “sounds good” can lead to frustration later. It’s better to take the time to understand your interests and direction first — and that’s where a little expert guidance can help.
